Lagos Island : The Chronicles- Part 1

"Kookoorookoo!",crowed the hungry yet visibly rugged ,full-grown rooster . "Allahu Akba",cried the prayer conductor calling devout muslim faithfuls to prayer. "Fakeyi! Oguntunyise! Sangoseyeye!",yelled iya alalubosa of 4,Ewenje street,Lagos Island. "Wa! Ki lon se iyalalaya e. Ogun fe pa e ni",bellowed Apata aka the Rock,a hemp dealer who got angry at one of his 'soldiers' who had delayed in attending to his -Apata's- esteemed patron. Interesting, right? "Huph! huph! eleyi kan ju'yen lo", said a religious smoker of the kwe (hemp) to another patron and his friends. The dragged weed must have struck a chord like ding!

Soon afterward,"Yaba,Palmgroove ,Onipanu,Maryland! Oshodi! Oshodi! Ikeja, Iyana Oworo, Toll gate! Wole pelu shenji e o!", rented the air at a random yet consistent frequency. How else would the conductors call out on passengers? Send emails? Lol. I guess not.The passage of time from the early hours, interestingly characterised by various activities, gradually ushers in the Sun.

The bros get round,White face and round body. He no dey smile or laugh at all.If e smile small,na vitamin D e go give you. Once it gets angry,Jesu! It dehydrates the ocean outta yah. Thank goodness! Cold 'pure' water can do little wonder-helps refresh you. Like a flash appeared the 'pure' water vendor who yelled,"pure water tutu ree!". She continued,"buy your 'cool' pure water". Ahahahaha! I laugh each time i hear,"buy your 'cool' pure water".

Then comes the orisirisi phrases that fill the air from diverse customers  at a popular Amala joint. You'd hear, "e joo e bu Amala sinu abo nla yen. E fi ponmo kan saki kan eja kika kan ati bokotoo meji si",said a gentleman with a protruding tummy that can best be described as Ikun Aleluyah. Still at the joint, you'd find customers of varying purchasing and eating capacities.Whereas some buy just one wrap of the black Amala decorated with eran orisirisi, others buy just one wrap with just a piece of meat or no meat at all.Worthy of mention is the fact that they -over 95%- eat with their bare hands. You need to see the way the abule abokis in Lagos Island eat the Amala with Okra. They literally rinse the engaged hand in the soup in the course of eating. The sight of that can be disgusting, but can you stop them from enjoy their meals? If i hear. Is it your money? Biko free them, jor! Lol.
Lagos Island... a place with a plethora of occurrences.
Stay tuned for the subsequent parts. Adios!
